How To Make Scented Candles at Home – Step By Step

how to make scented candles at home step by step

Candles are a great way to make your home smell nice, and they can be a relaxing addition to your evening routine. But store-bought candles can be expensive, and many contain synthetic fragrances that can be harmful to your health. Making your own candles at home is a great way to avoid these issues, and it’s easier than you might think! In this post, we’ll walk you through the steps for how to make scented candles at home, using essential oils for a natural fragrance.

What You’ll Need To Make Candles At Home?

-Wax
-A wick
-Fragrance oil
-A double boiler or makeshift candle melter (a heat-safe bowl set atop a saucepan of simmering water)
-Pourable wax measuring cup or spoon
-Thermometer
-Candy thermometer
-Pencil
-Scissors
-Chopstick or skewer
-Candle mold(s) and/or jar(s)

Step One: Choose Your Wax

Before you can start making your own scented candles, you need to choose the right wax. There are many different types of wax available on the market, but not all of them are suitable for making scented candles. The most popular type of wax used for making scented candles is paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is a petroleum-based product that is easy to work with and gives candles a smooth, even burn. However, paraffin wax can be difficult to find and can be expensive. If you are looking for an alternative to paraffin wax, you can try beeswax, soy wax, or palm wax.

Beeswax is a natural product that is made by bees. It is easy to work with and gives candles a beautiful honey scent. However, beeswax can be difficult to find and is more expensive than other types of wax.

Soy wax is made from soybeans and is a renewable resource. Soy wax is easy to work with and gives candles a clean burning scent. However, soy wax can be difficult to find and may be more expensive than other types of wax.

Palm wax is made from the fruit of palm trees. Palm waxes are usually softer than other types of wax and have a slightly tropical scent. Palm Waxes may be difficult to find and may be more expensive than other types of Waxes

Step Two: Choose Your Wicks

The second step in making your own scented candles at home is to choose your wicks. Wax has a high melting point, so you’ll need a wick that can withstand the heat of the wax as it melts. The size of the wick also affects how well your candle burns – a too-small wick will result in a weak flame that doesn’t produce much light, while a too-large wick will create a large flame that may cause the wax to melt too quickly.

When choosing your wicks, there are two main types to choose from: natural or synthetic. Natural wicks are made from materials like cotton or linen, while synthetic wicks are usually made from polyester or nylon. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs.

Natural wicks have a tendency to be weaker than synthetic wicks, so they may not burn as long or as brightly. However, they’re often cheaper and easier to find than synthetic wicks. Synthetic wicks, on the other hand, tend to be more durable and longer-lasting than natural wicks. They may cost more upfront, but they’ll save you money in the long run as you won’t have to replace them as often.

Once you’ve chosen your wicks, it’s time to move on to step three: choosing your wax.

Step Three: Choose Your Fragrance Oil

When it comes to choosing your fragrance oil, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, think about what type of scent you want your candle to have. Do you want something sweet and fruity? Or perhaps something more earthy and musky? Once you’ve decided on the general scent family you’re looking for, narrow down your choices by taking a quick sniff of each oil. Trust your gut – if you love the way it smells, chances are good that it will make a great candle!

Once you’ve chosen your fragrance oil, it’s time to move on to step four: selecting the perfect wick for your candles.

Step Four: Melt the Wax

Once you have your wicks all set up, it’s time to melt some wax! You can use a double boiler or a microwave to melt your wax. If you’re using a double boiler, just fill the bottom pot with water and place your wax in the top pot. Put the pot on the stove over low heat and wait for the wax to melt. If you’re using a microwave, put your wax in a microwavable bowl and heat it in 30-second increments until it’s melted.

Once your wax is melted, you can add your fragrance oil. Just stir it in until it’s well combined. Then, carefully pour the wax into your prepared jars. Fill them up to about 1/2 inch from the top of the jar. Allow the candles to cool and harden for a few hours before trimming the wicks and lighting them!

Step Five: Add the Fragrance Oil

When you’re ready to add the fragrance oil, start with about 1/2 teaspoon per pound of wax. If you’re using a particularly strong fragrance, you can start with less and add more to taste. Add the fragrance oil to the melted wax and stir well. Then, pour the wax into your prepared mold or container and let it cool completely.

Step Six: Pour the Wax into the Container

Pour the wax into the container you have chosen. If you are using a glass container, be sure to use a funnel to avoid making a mess. Fill the container to within about 1/2 inch of the top. Allow the wax to cool for a few minutes so that it is not too hot when you add the fragrance oil.

Step Seven: Let the Candle Cool & Enjoy!

Once your candle is fully melted, carefully remove it from the heat source and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Once it’s cooled enough to handle, carefully pour it into your mold or container of choice. Allow the candle to cool completely before trimming the wick and lighting it. Enjoy your homemade scented candle!
